Pointe Au Baril
June 30 - July 2, 2017
This course will use Sturgeon Bay Provincial Park to access the near by waters of Sturgeon Bay and Pointe Au Baril Channel. This is classic Georgian Bay country, but offers a wide variety of protected areas. There are friendly beaches and challenging rocky shores for us to use as we desire. By this time of year the water is comfortable for swimming, and if fact offers welcome relief from the heat of summer.
Although there are no course prerequisites, some kayaking experience would be beneficial. Comfort in the outdoors and in the water is a real plus.
Food and Lodging
The park offers a variety of camp sites for tents or trailers. There are comfort stations with running water available. Camp sites can be shared. Arrangements can be made if you do not have camping gear. If you decide to stay at another location you will need to buy a day use permit.
Cooking, cleaning and the cost of food can be shared, or you can take care of your own if you wish
You may wish to bring a bit of alcohol to enjoy in the evening after all paddling has been completed.
The course goes on – rain, shine! So bring clothing suitable for a wide range of conditions, including rain gear. Layering always works well.
We will be out in the open for hours at a time so don’t forget the long sleeved SPF shirts, hats, sun glasses, water bottle and sun screen. If you have small dry bags they can also be handy as day bags.
An important part of safe kayaking is knowing how to perform a rescue. There is a fair amount of rescue work in an intermediate level course. So be prepared to get wet.
Other useful things (if you have them) are nose plugs, swim goggles and swim caps.
The cost is $295.00. There is no H.S.T. This cost includes:
ORCKA Certified Instruction
- ORCKA Coastal Kayak Level 1 certification for successful candidates
Use of a Kayak and required paddling gear
